Unloched
A boy. A boat. A storm.
One day that will tear a family apart.
Two sisters are reunited, but for how long? Can their fragile relationship survive once the secrets of the past are finally unlocked?
A mother’s dying wish sends twin sisters Lauren and Trina back to the place of their childhood vacations, on the Gippsland Lakes, to restore and sell a dilapidated houseboat. Although the twins were almost inseparable throughout childhood, a wild storm and the events that followed drove the girls apart in their teenage years.
Now, ten years later, Lauren and Trina are forced to face each other and themselves as they discover the role their mother played in their estrangement. As the houseboat is gradually stripped bare, so are the lives of these women as the truth emerges.
A story of secrets and betrayal, Unloched takes the reader on an emotional journey through the landscape of the family. Commended in the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards for an unpublished manuscript, this is Candice Lemon-Scott’s debut novel.

Unloched by Candice Lemon-Scott is a story about twin sisters, Lauren and Trina, and the difficulty of their childhood and the event that tore apart such a special bond between sisters. Their mother, Gisella, has issues of her own that affect each of her daughters in different ways. Lauren becomes the docile caregiver while Trina escapes the confines of the somewhat twisted relationships at home. Summers were spent on their houseboat during their growing up years and this is also where all of the heartaches of this family seem to lie. Neither Lauren or Trina has been on the houseboat since they were teenagers, and neither wants to return. As her dying instructions, Gisella wants her daughters to work together to ready the houseboat for sale in the hopes that they will come together again as sisters. The wounds may be too deep for such expectations. Neither sister wants to reconcile, but will they have a change of heart when they are face to face and working side by side? As they uncover truths they did not know, will it make a difference?
Candice Lemon-Scott has provided a story that holds your interest as you wait to see what happens next. Her characters are realistic and vulnerable. The setting for this story is one that the author knows well and Candice Lemon-Scott has described the setting vividly, which allows the reader to experience the beauty of an area they may never have seen for themselves. Some terminology is strictly Australian, but easily understood in its context. The story was interesting and it held my interest. I enjoyed reading this book.
